Twilight Kayaking at the JLAC
Oakland, CA
Fri, August 7, 2009
5:00pm -7:00pm
Leaves promptly at 5:30pm
The Columbia University Alumni Club of Northern California, the Jack London Aquatic Center and Robert Kidd CC’70 invite you to an after-work kayak expedition on the Oakland Estuary, on Friday, August 7, 2009.
This will be the Club’s fifth annual kayaking event at the Jack London Aquatic Center: a great way to see the Oakland-Alameda Estuary waterfront from the water. It has been sold out every year. No prior experience is necessary; you don't even need to know how to swim.
The expedition is limited to 24 kayakers, so RSVP ASAP!
We will gather at the Jack London Aquatic Center (directions below) on Friday, August 7, 2009, at and shortly after 5:00 PM. We will leave dock promptly at 5:30 PM, and will return by 7:00 PM. Our itinerary will take us down the Oakland Estuary, past the Coast Guard cutters moored at Coast Guard Island, around Coast Guard Island into Embarcadero Cove, past the controversial Oak-to-Ninth real estate development, past the mysterious hulks of the historic Alaska Packer sailing ships, and back to the Jack London Aquatic Center.
Please join us afterward for no-host supper, beverages and tall tales of kayaking. Location TBA.
The JLAC will provide all equipment, kayaks, paddles, life jackets, instruction and on-water guidance. Wear casual clothing; synthetics better than cotton or wool; shorts better than long pants; sandals better than sneakers. We provide waterproof tops, for those who want them. You may change at the Aquatic Center. Bring sun glasses, a hat, a light jacket, a towel, a change of clothing (in case you get damp) and a bottle of water. You will be asked to sign a liability release before departing.
The Jack London Aquatic Center is located in Oakland’s Estuary Park, on the Embarcadero, between Oak Street and 5th Avenue. The Aquatic Center is located about one mile southeast of Jack London Square, along the Embarcadero, but note that it is not located in Jack London Square. The nearest BART station is Lake Merritt Station, on the Dublin/Fremont lines, about ½ mile walk from the Aquatic Center. Let us know if you are taking BART; we will try to arrange for someone to pick you up at Lake Merritt Station.
