Gandhi Day of Service - Be the Change 2009
San Francisco Bay Area (various locations)
Saturday, October 3, 2009
9:00am - 3:00pm
The Columbia Alumni Club of Northern California is organizing a group to participate in the annual National Day of Service on October 3, 2009.
Be the Change is the annual national day of service coordinated by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) to inspire and foster civic engagement through volunteerism and community service. Every year, thousands of participants across the country collectively contribute innumerable hours of community service in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
In 2008, over 2000 people contributed 4000 service hours in 40 cities and campuses across the country.
We put together a great team last year, and let's try to do it again this year! The details of the projects are TBD. Service projects last year included the SF Food Bank, Children's Hospital, Project Open Hand, Habitat for Humanity, Park Restoration, and many more.
This year's event will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2009, in the Bay Area. There will be a kick-off event in the morning, and then we will split up into our project groups. There will also be an informal post-project meet-up later in the day so we can all chat about our experiences at a restaurant that is central to all project sites.
Please note that this is open to friends/family of Columbia Alumni, so get others to sign up as well! Be the Change 2009 organizers will coordinate our registration so that members of our group are placed on the same project(s).
